Why #ChooseBDA is More than Just about Shopping Local..

May 14, 2020

The Coronavirus Pandemic created a crisis for Bermuda business owners as they had to pack up shop, lay off staff and hope that they could still pay rent, insurance and taxes all while no income was coming in. Seemingly overnight, businesses of all sizes suddenly had a lot of stuff to figure out and most importantly wondered how long the pandemic would last and who would be eradicated first..their business or the virus.

Many businesses in Bermuda have tight profit margins, limited cash reserves and minimal credit available to weather pandemics and therefore rely on the constant flow of foot traffic to cover their expenses. If you don't own a business, it's challenging to fully comprehend the risk owners take on a daily basis to provide for their family and staff, but a concept we all understand is that income needs to be greater than expenses for survival. And that's the point...income in a business needs to be higher than expenses...but this same equation applies to all our households and if you're one of the many people who work in retail, or are an employee of a small-med size business, this matters.

We are all in this together...#ChooseBDA is not about shopping local just because..it's about challenging all of us..from retailers to shoppers to do their part to help Bermuda. It's about asking businesses to do more for their customers, to incentivize shoppers, to make their products more accessible, to improve their customer service and visual merchandising. It's about asking shoppers to consciously consider where they spend their dollars and to choose local options where prices are competitive, service is exceptional and products are curated for life in Bermuda. We all have a part to play and the outcome impacts us all. No one is immune if our stores don't reopen, our service providers shut down and thousands of people are unemployed.

Although we have now implemented a phased approach to reopening, it's obvious that things will will not get back to "normal" quickly and business owners are adapting. And how are they adapting...? Over the last few weeks, we have seen a flurry of stores announce their new online shopping sites, promote their range of delivery options, offer virtual shopping appointments and showcase the range of in-store goodies all over social media. We are seeing business owners incentive shoppers with amazing discounts, complimentary samples and personalized offerings that are impossible to resist! Bermuda businesses are stepping up to the plate and making a choice to get back to work and deliver the goods and services we all need to keep our household running, our children entertained, our well-being supported and our bodies clothed.

Small-medium size businesses in Bermuda create a bulk of this country’s jobs, service our needs and shape our community. They are what’s generating economic activity, supporting schools, parks, your child’s sports team and other community services. So as stores reopen their doors, bring back staff, and launch their online sites, choose to support these businesses. Buy gift cards, buy a little something extra, use their services,  follow them on social, promote them to your friends and ultimately #CHOOSEBDA...not because they are businesses you can't live without..but because they are businesses that you don't want to live without.

We are all in this together...Happy NABbing!
